We would like to commend the President of Rwanda His Excellency Mr Paul Kigame, the President of Malawi Professor Mutharika and the President of DRC Mr Felix Tshisekedi for withdrawing from the World Economic Forum to be held in Capetown, South Africa.
We urge all the African states to cautiously withdraw from the WEF as this cannot be business as usual when foreign nationals in the Republic of South Africa are being harassed, hacked, beaten, properties burnt and vandalised, foreign drivers being targeted, hacked and beaten, South African trucks driven by foreign nationals being set alight and foreign-owned shops burnt, goods stolen and looted.
Since the beginning of the year, 37 trucks driven by foreign nationals have been burnt to ashes and over the past weekend, 7 trucks driven by foreign nationals have been burnt. This is not acts of criminality, it is XENOPHOBIA.
The Government of the Republic of South Africa has a big task to protect foreign nationals and to make sure that all migrants are safe. This is a crisis that needs to be attended to other than hosting the World Economic Forum.
We now live in a global market, where each country regardless is dependent on another through trade and foreign investments. For foreign nationals to invest and trade in any country, safety and protection should be guaranteed.
